The journal “Brief Communications of Institute of Archaeology” publish theoretical and research papers on archaeology and allied disciplines, archaeological materials of great interest and information on archaeological expeditions. The book is published several times per year.
Manuscripts submitted for publication in the journal are required to follow the approved guidelines:
- The contents of the manuscript are required to reflect the topics of the journal . Other materials (letters to the Editor; declarations, etc.) are published only by special decision of the editorial board.
- The manuscript is submitted electronically (Microsoft Word).
- Submitted manuscripts should be structured as follows: a) main text; b) references (See point 10); c) figure captions; d) abstract and keywords (See point 11); e) list of abbreviations; f); tables (See point 8); g) illustrations (if required, See point 7); h) author(s)’s last name(s) and contact details (See point 12). All specified sections of the manuscript should start at a new page.
- The size of the manuscript should not exceed 0.8 printer’s sheet (32,000 characters with spacing) and 3 illustrations. It is allowed to increase the number of illustrations with relevant decrease in the size of the text. The manuscript includes all sections of the paper referred to in pp. 3 (a-f). All pages should be continuously and serially numbered as one document without omissions and additional letters (a, b …).
- The text should be formatted automatically; the space bar should not be used for indent. In the title initials are placed before the authors’ last names. The title is typed using a ‘normal’ font (Do not use uppercase).
- All off-standard letters and characters in the text of the manuscript should be supported by necessary clarifications.
- Illustrations are submitted electronically in separate, clearly named files in TIFF format (Please, do not embed illustrations in the text). Illustrations should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text of the paper. One numeration is used for all types of illustrations. Parts (part 1, part 2, a, b) of the same figure should be combined taking into account that they will be subsequently reduced in the book. Parts that have not been combined in the composite figure will be viewed as separate figures when the total number of illustrations in the paper is counted. Too much reduction in the size of the figures should be avoided, as the size of illustrations in print format is 13 cm by 19 cm.
The caption should contain brief, clear explanations of symbols and markers on the illustration. Captions and explanations are not embedded in the graphics file. It is necessary to ensure that the caption and numeration in the text and illustrations are consistent.
All black and white illustrations should be scanned in the grayscale on a scale of 1:1 at a resolution of at least 300 dpi for photographs and 600 dpi for line art figures.
Color illustrations are possible if color is essential for conveying information.
- Tables (numerical and text) are submitted in separate files (Please, do not embed tables in the text). Tables should have a title and should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text. The title of the table is brief and does not contain abbreviations.
- Footnotes are given at the bottom of a relevant page, and are continuously numbered (1, 2…).
- Reference entries are presented in alphabetical order, the list of references consists of two parts. The first part includes publications in the Cyrillic alphabet; the second part includes publications in the Latin alphabet. Titles of field reports are included in a relevant part. The last name and initials are followed by publication year and bibliographic description. Reference to a book should include the number of pages; reference to a paper or a section in a monograph should include start page through end page of the paper or section in the publication. The reference should include the editor of the book; publication place should be followed by the publisher. Multiple works by the same author are listed chronologically. If references are made to different works by the same author published in the same year, letters in the alphabetical order are added to the year in the list of references and in the text.

The author’s last name (in the language of the publication) or the abbreviated title (if the publication does not have the author), publication year, reference to the page, figure, and table are given in parentheses in the text of the paper (Седов, 1979. С. 50). References to the sources, such as original works of ancient authors, archival materials (with exception of field reports), and museum collections are provided in parentheses in the text (Hrd. IV, 119) and are not included in the list of references.
- A list of keywords (maximum 10) along with the abstract in the Russian language (a concise description of the scope of work, with references made to the figures illustrating key statements, which should not exceed half a page) are enclosed to the paper. The text of the abstract should be structured as follows: the issue raised in the paper, the objective and the task of the paper, methods used, results, and conclusions. To make translation of the abstract to English easier, it is necessary to: a) use the nominative singular in denoting periods, types, cultures derived from geographical names (e.g. Kushnarenkovsky is derived from Kushnarenkovo); b) provide translation of particular terms or clarifications. In addition to the Russian text of the abstract, the author can attach his/her own variant of the English text of the Abstract and Keywords.
- Information on the author(s) such as the last name, first name and patronymic, full mail address, affiliation, telephones, e-mail address, and the date of submission should be enclosed.
- Papers sent to the authors to be reworked are required to be resubmitted after reworking not later than four months later. Papers received after the deadline will be viewed as new submissions.
Papers prepared without following these guidelines will not be accepted for review.
